When I first got into photography I was an event photographer. I was busy every weekend. I mostly did small events and birthday parties. Let me tell you niching down to birthday parties will keep you busy. I was burnt out after about 6 months and decided to stop doing events. I still do them now but only if you are a regular client of mine or I know you personally. Other than that I have other people I can point you towards.
When doing an event the first thing you need to do is ask what is needed. If it’s a birthday party you know you need to get the child but if it’s a corporate event what are they looking for you to get? Certain people? The decor? Ask what the main focus is and then go from there.
Get candid moments that include group photos, candid group moments (not posed just random moments), and documentary group photos (capturing groups of people that are in the moment).
Lighting can be a challenge if you are indoors or doing a night event. Make sure you have a flash or find the light where it’s at. I am a big believer in using the light that you have and finding a way to frame your photos around that.
Here is a tip make sure you grab some video for the event too right on your camera no need to switch anything just add that touch in and surprise the person who hired you. It will be a nice touch and they will appreciate it.
Another tip. Niche down and do only speaking events or birthday parties (this one is an untapped market trust me on this) or corporate events. Concerts are a huge one too but hard to get into. Tap into local concerts at schools and work your way up.
