My mom, unbeknownst to me, was a photographer. She kept a camera in her hand capturing daily life from the time that I was born until two months before she died. I found her collections of photographs and every time I look through them I get a sense of being close to her even though she is in heaven now.
I picked up a camera to take photos of my babies and my blog stuff and then turned it into a lucrative hobby. Why a lucrative hobby? Well because I never want to be a big-time photographer because I don’t want the love of photography to leave me or to escape me. If I turn it into a big business I’m afraid the love for it…the simplicity of it will go away too.
Anyone can be a photographer though so here is how
- Get a camera. I started off with a canon t3i but these days your phone will work. If I’m taking pics for social I use my phone if I’m taking pics for my brand, a client, or something I want to blow up for any type of promotion I use my big boy.
- Charge what you can but you start free and build your portfolio. Nothing wrong with free. I did free for 3 years and all of them are paying clients that send me more clients to this day.
- Have a portfolio. Something that people can look at. Don’t just rely on Instagram. Not everyone is on there. Believe it or not, some people don’t like social media and a lot of my clients are barely on Facebook.
- It’s a process! With that said find something that makes you stand out from the rest. For me, it’s by being funny. We laugh a lot at my shoots. That’s just my personality. Find yours and bring it. Take classes on youtube university too.
