The cell phone is the debil…yes I spelled it wrong. Someone asked me the other day do I get on social media to scroll or to consume. I think I can do both but when I check my time log for how long I spend on social media it says I consume more than I create so we need to change that. Here are some ways I stay off my phone so I can get work done.
During the summer, I delete social media from my cell and only go on there via my computer, and I pop in on Sundays to do my Project 365. Unless I need to showcase something, I take the app off from June to mid-August. This gives me time to focus on other things. I don’t take a break like some people do but I take it off my phone to give myself a break from always picking up my phone to check social media. I am now enrolled at Savannah State to complete my MBA and my time is going to be limited and I need to be disciplined in order to do what I can when I can so here is what I plan on doing.
I may keep social media off of my phone and schedule out what I need to schedule on Meta for the week. I schedule out my content for my other business so I can do that for Kita Bryant also. Someone said on threads at one time that they only have social media on their tablet and that they leave their tablet at home. I can’t leave my phone but this is a great idea so you are only checking social media when you are home.
Set up rules with myself. For every minute I spend on social is a min I have to give back to myself. Meaning if I spend 10 min scrolling, I need to spend 10 min doing something around the house, something other than social media, or reading a piece of article, or even creating content for my brand.
I know some people use Brick. To help them and I have been debating on if I should. It can help and I need a little bit of outside help.
Put my phone in another room. I have been doing this a lot this summer so that it breaks the habit of me picking up my phone. You can also take notifications off so that you aren’t distracted by that.
Set time limits for social media. I have an old rule it’s called the 5 times 3 rule. You can read about it in depth here but essentially, it’s I get on social media 3 times a day for 5 minutes, then that’s it. I don’t follow this rule like I should (summer, I do), but I need to.
Set physical boundaries. I have kids, so that is hard to do, but if you don’t have kids and you are going out to eat, tell the people you care about, ” Hey, I’m going to such and such and I’ll be here for about 2 hours I won’t have my phone but I’ll get back in touch with you when I get back to the car”. Leave the phone in the car and go have fun. If you can’t have fun with someone with your phone, then maybe you need to…..
Redirect your addiction to social media or your phone by reaching for something else instead of your phone. So when I’m watching certain shows, and it’s a commercial, I reach for my puzzle book until the show comes back on, or I may journal something on a piece of paper during that time, or I may do something quick around the home, or I even take the time to walk during that time.
What are some other ways you stay off your phone or just social media?
