We ask kids this all the time…what do you want to be when you grow up. Kids will answer based on what they see on TV, in their environments, and what they hear daily. When I was asked that question my answer always changed. When I was in elementary people told me I should be a lawyer (I got that a lot). In middle school I wanted to be an author because I loved to read so much and I imagined my name on the top of books. In high school, the question was asked as part of my yearbook and I said CEO of a bank because that’s where the money was at. Little did I know that black folks aren’t really CEO of banks. I’m over 40 now and I ask myself all the time what do I want to be when I grow up. Here is my answer….
I don’t know lol.
I want to be where the money resides (like the dude said on social media)
How I get there though is still a mystery to me. When I came to college to study I originally picked Mass communication because I thought I could be on radio. I switched to Business with a concentration in Marketing and had this grand idea to one day have my own marketing firm. 20 years later. I’m doing none of it…well technically.
I am kinda an author because I write on this blog. I’m CEO of my own money which is not the same lol. As far as marketing I thought I wanted to do influencer stuff but chile I am not cut out for that. So I’m still stuck with what do I want to be as I grow.
As I continue to grow up I aspire to have good customer service no matter what field I’m in. I aspire to still write that book (it’s coming). I aspire to be a life long learner. I aspire to live comfortably and enjoy life as much as I can. I aspire to adapt to whatever field chooses me because sometimes how we make our money picks us (me doing photography didn’t see that coming at all) not the other way around. When I grow up I just want to make better decisions because when you know better you do better. That is all I can do as the world changes and we adapt do new technologies and new careers that can come out of nowhere.
So I ask….What do you want to be when you grow up? It’s ok if you don’t know and it’s ok if you change your mind as you grow.
