A 10-year-old birthday shoot to remember

A 10 year old birthday photoshoot to remember

I didn’t have photoshoots that represented my personality when I was younger. My mom took some pictures but I wanted to have my own shoot at Olan Mills. They have since closed down but I love when parents reach out to me to have their kids birthday shoots done. I can do documentary style or just straight portraits. We decided to do this one at the house to make the birthday girl feel right at home…literally. I don’t typically do shoots in a home because the lighting can be horrible, but we were able to find the light, and the pictures came out gorgeous. Here is a 10-year-old birthday photoshoot to remember.

I wanted to showcase her personality the most. She is part of a cheer team, so we wanted her pics to represent fun but cutesy at the same time. She had on her Cali jersey for some added personality. We didn’t have a plan at all we just shot who she was in the moment with the balloons in the background. I loved that it wasn’t posed all the way but just enough to get some fab portraits.

Being 10 is a huge milestone, so I wanted her to be comfortable. One of the tricks that I do with kids to get them to laugh is to try to do one of their sayings back to them. Like 6/7 or I come up with whatever the latest trend is at the moment, and they usually laugh because they know I have no idea what any of it means.

How does taking photos in a home look?

It can be fun because you are on the same turf as the child. Sometimes kids don’t want to be taken out of their element; they need an environment to feel like themselves. My tip is to find the light that’s all you need to do. Once you find the light, make sure you get rid of as many background distractions as you can. If you can’t leave it in it’s their home, and sometimes it’s nice to be reminded of that as you get older or move out.

If I can sum up this session in 3 words, it would be California, happy blues (ok, that’s two), and TEN.

Capturing a 10-year-old on her birthday is a huge milestone. It’s a time when they are going to have more of a personality, and you want to capture that so you can remember that time (it goes by fast) and so that they can see who they were at 10 years old when they get older and have their own family.

Ready for your own Birthday shoot? It doesn’t matter your age, as long as you want to have fun and document it, we can even pretend you are 10, even if we have to add some numbers to it.

Whether it’s your first family session or your tenth, these moments deserve to be documented. As a
Conyers family photographer, I believe the best images happen when families feel free to just be
themselves—messy, playful, loving, and real.
