Did you know that my first free photoshoot was an engagement? This was back in 2014 when I did all the free shoots that I could to learn and grow. It was a blog buddy of mine who asked me to do a photo of them, and I was scared as hell but we powered through. Photos were trash back then, but whew the growth. BTW, the couple I did is still my client today. I have done her events, kids, documented her life, etc. Fast forward to 2025, and I was able to do an engagement photoshoot at the Georgia state capital with my neicey poo Tay and Jay. At the time of this post, they are already married so congrats to them (I will not be doing their wedding, I want to sit and observe).
When Tay first asked me to do the shoot, I was like…you can shoot down there? For Free? I thought that was suspicious. I know they keep down there under lock and key, so to see that they allow shoots down there without booking or without a payment was odd, but she was right.
But…..
All good things, though, have to come to an end. You can no longer just show up down there to shoot. There are some new rules in place for 2026. I copied and pasted the new rules and you can also read them here.
1. Outside of any session of the General Assembly, reservations for photography sessions will be limited to the South Wing between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. on Mondays and 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays.
2. Individuals participating in the photography session shall not sit on any railings, nor shall items be draped or hung over the railings.
3. There shall be no blocking of stairs, hallways or doorways.
4. There shall be no holding of elevator doors or blocking of elevators for any photography session.
5. Flash photography is prohibited.
6. The use of large props, signs, or balloons is prohibited.
Flash is almost kinda needed but not really. It can be dark in there and I hate having to bump that ISO up but hey it’s the rules.
I probably won’t be shooting there in the future but it was gorgeous during the holidays. Security is tight so make sure you take out your pepper sprays and all that if you go.
Here are a few of my favorite photos of them.
