Travel Hacks for Your Next Vacation

Travel Hacks for Your Next Vacation

Vacation planning is exciting, whether you’re staying just down the road or jetting off on an international getaway, but if you don’t plan it right, travel can be overwhelming. If you’re looking to save time, money, and eliminate stress, you’re in the right place. Here are some travel hacks for your next vacation, you’re going to want to write down.

Travel Hacks for Your Next Vacation

1. Use Private Browsing

When booking your travel flights or accommodations, use private browsing so you can avoid being tracked by airlines and other travel websites. Websites typically use cookies to track your browsing history and online activities. They use this information against you, especially if you’ve researched the same locations more than once, by inflating prices because they recognize that you’re interested. So, opt for private browsers like Google Chrome Incognito mode when booking travel.

2. Join Facebook Groups

Love it or hate it, Facebook is still a popular resource for groups of people with similar interests. So it may benefit you to join groups on the platform related to areas you’re hoping to travel. This is a great way to get insider information on the best places to eat, visit, and explore. Plus, if you’re looking for something specific, you can use the search function within the group posts and find exactly what you want to know.

3. Get on the Mailing List

Once you know where you’re going and you’ve done the research and have a general idea of a few places you’d like to eat, visit their website and get on the mailing list. Often, you’ll get updates on specials that might align with your travel dates. Sometimes restaurants will even send new mailing list subscribers an email coupon for a free appetizer or beverage. If you’re traveling around your birthday, you may even get a special birthday surprise in your email inbox.

4. Make PDFs of Your Documents

The last thing you want in an emergency is to be without your important documents. So, of course, keep the original copies in your hotel room safe, but be sure that before your trip, you email yourself PDF copies of all pertinent information. This can include your passport, insurance info, identification, and even your travel itinerary with flight numbers and times. If you lose your phone or laptop or have a difficult time accessing your originals for any reason, you’ll know you at least have a copy of everything in your email.

5. Join a Trusted Traveler Program

Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) is just a fancy umbrella term from the Department of Homeland Security that provides expedited services for low-risk travelers. You’ve likely heard of TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, or CLEAR; they get you moving through the airport lines faster. The fees for each vary, but after your first trip, they pay for themselves. Plus, you’ll breeze through the airport, and that accounts for something.

6. Book a Condo vs. a Hotel

If you’re staying for a lengthy trip, consider booking an Airbnb, either a full home or condo, or even one of the timeshare rentals you can find in many travel destinations. The benefits of a condo over a hotel are many. Most importantly, you’ll have access to a mini or full kitchen as well as a washer and dryer. This can save you time and money because you’ll have to pack fewer clothes and can eat some of your meals before you leave the condo for the day.

 7. Plan a Day Off After Your Day Off

If you always feel like you need a vacation from your vacation, consider a buffer day. Don’t go right back to work the day after you arrive home from your trip. That extra day will allow you to decompress, reset, and get back into work mode. It’s a great opportunity to do laundry, get some grocery shopping done, and maybe even take a peek at all the emails you missed, so you don’t walk into any surprises at the office.

10. Download Your Media

Wifi and service during travel can be hit or miss, so if you’re traveling, download your movies, podcasts, and books to your device so you’re not stuck twiddling your thumbs during vacation downtime. Many times, spotty internet is just the norm, especially in the mountains or in some remote areas of the country. Plus, airports are known for spotty reception, so don’t miss out on your favorite show. Download everything ahead of time, and you’ll be ready to go!

9. Travel in the Off-Season

The best way to save on accommodations and flights is to travel during off-peak times. Not only that, but crowds may be considerably less than in the heart of travel season. You’ll be able to enjoy your destination rather than spending time in crowds and standing in long lines. Be sure, though, especially in the off-season, to check the weather and business hours. Some businesses close down during slow periods, and you don’t want to have something on your itinerary that’s not going to be open when you arrive.

10. Get Somebody Else to Do It

Some of us love travel planning, and that’s understandable. It can be fun to do all the research yourself, but every once in a while, consider using the services of a travel planner. A travel agent will have access to discounts that you may not, and they can offer tips and advice along the way that can help save you time, money, energy, and stress. So, don’t DIY it if you don’t have to. Usually, an agent won’t cost you anything additional, so there’s nothing to worry about there.

If you’re planning a trip soon, consider using one of these travel hacks for your next vacation and see how much easier things go for you. Whenever we can save time, money, or hassle, it makes the trip that much more enjoyable and worth it.
