Whether you’re a seasoned content creator, business owner, aspiring influencer, or someone who wants to dip their toe into the world of online content creation just for fun, now is the time to get serious! One way to kickstart your online content as we head into a new year is to participate in Vlogmas, Blogmas, or both! If you’re curious, read on!

It’s Time for Vlogmas: Kickstart Your Online Content for the New Year

What is Vlogmas?

Simply put, the premise of Vlogmas revolves around creating holiday content on your social media platforms. The term was first coined by YouTube content creator, Ingrid Nilsen in 2011 as a way to connect with her audience. Nilsen, opted to put out an advent calendar of content of sorts for her followers, chronicling all of the holiday activities she and her family embarked upon.

The idea of Vlogmas then spread like rapid fire throughout social media. Content creators jumped on the bandwagon and started to curate their own holiday content; often throughout December or sometimes just relegated to the 12 Days of Chrismas. The trend spread across platforms, Blogmas was born and even more creators began creating similar content on their blogs and Instagram and TikTok accounts.

How to Participate

If you’re intrigued by the idea of vlogging or blogging this holiday season, it is a great way to kickstart your online content for the new year. You’ll likely gain more followers during this time who will subscribe to your social media channels and ultimately help you expand your reach.

For those interested in vlogmas, typically YouTube is the primary platform where this happens, so if you don’t have an account there, that’s the first step. What is great about YouTube is that it is fairly easy to get started, and it can be a source of income without many hoops to jump through.  Your YouTube channel is tied in with your Gmail account, so if you’re already using Gmail, you’re halfway there.

Of course, you could always create short-form vlogmas content on TikTok or Instagram; the premise is the same and this content is usually easier to create as there’s not a whole lot of editing involved in creating it.

If you’re more of a blogger, consider writing a blog post every month for Blogmas. This is a great way to show Google that your blog is worthy of being indexed, which will help you increase your views and traffic in time.

What Type of Content Should I Create for Vlogmas?

So now that you’re ready to dig in and participate in Vlogmas or Blogmas, you may be wondering what type of content you should create. Well, what many experts have learned over the years is that often, simple is best. There’s no need to go to elaborate measures to create content that is over the top, edited, and curated; of course, unless that’s something that you want to do. The bottom line when it comes to social media is that people want to see what others are doing in their everyday lives.

This means, that you can easily create content around the simple things you do during the holiday season. If you’re setting up the Christmas tree, film those special ornaments and funny moments that occur while decorating. Baking is a big hit during the holidays too. If you have a special recipe for sugar cookies, share that on your platform. It’s quite simple to create content based on what you’re doing in the moment. Don’t overthink it and you’ll be fine. Remember, people want real, they resonate with the every day.

Consistency is Key

Whatever you decide, the number one piece of advice I can give is that you must remain consistent. It makes no sense to film thirty days of your life during the holidays and then fall off the content creation train until Easter. You need to remain consistent, upload content regularly, and connect with your audience. The algorithm appreciates and rewards consistency. You need that algorithm to like you if you intend to grow your following across your social media platforms.

Vlogmas is a lot of fun. So, if it’s something that you’ve considered, this year is the year to give it a try! You’ll be creating content to build your platform of course. You’ll also be preserving holiday memories for your family, for years to come!
