I am writing this on Jan 6th as this upcoming week will be the first full week of the New Year. Many kids will be back to school this week (my daughter on Wed) many of us will be back to work (I was never off) and this is when life gets back to normal after the holiday break. We want to rush into the New Year and be a new me so fast that we don’t take the time to just ease into the new year and take it one day and step at a time. We don’t have to do all the things or have everything together just because it’s 2025. Here is how I ease into the new year and how you can too.
Stop setting unrealistic goals. If you know you don’t have time to cook don’t say I’m going to get rid of doordash and cook more at home. Girl you don’t have time for that but what you can do is maybe cut down the number of times you order Doordash or just get rid of the app and only use stores that you can order from directly like pizza hut or chick fil a.
Practice “Productive Procrastination”. I know how we like to avoid things but try completing smaller tasks and improvements in other areas then build off of that into your goals. I don’t have resolutions I have goals. So one of my goals is to get under 200…I don’t like walking nor do I enjoy exercising but I can do smaller stuff like maybe parking farther away from the door of the store, or walking around the store to get extra steps in ( I do this at Costco a lot), etc. I want to also destress a smaller task may be to get to bed at 11 but maybe if I still have work to do I have my computer in bed. Hey, I’m in bed by 11 it’s a small step to improve my going to bed at a decent time.
Reframe January as a soft opening. Treat January as your year’s soft opening just like restaurants have soft openings to work out the kinks. There’s no pressure to have everything perfect on day one. This gives people permission to experiment and adjust without the usual New Year pressure.
You don’t have to have it all figured out in Jan. There’s no deadline on your growth and no reward for how fast you can get it together.
My word of the year is Resource. Use yours and I will be one for you.
