5 creative Holiday traditions to try this year

When it comes to the holidays, we all have our own traditions we’re used to. For some of us, if those traditions are changed, it can feel like the holiday isn’t complete. However, without changing other traditions, it might be fun to add in new traditions. Whether you’re trying to build your own family traditions or add to the old traditions you’re already used to, here are 5 creative holiday traditions to try this year.

Adopt a family – This is a great way to give others a chance to have a great holiday. Ask around to your local Goodwill or churches and see what families may be in need. Adopt a child or a whole family but it’s a great way to give this holiday season and it will make you feel good.

Let the kids cook a dish or two – My kids are teens but one of the things I wanted to do when I was younger was to contribute to the holiday meal. My mom wouldn’t let me near the kitchen but I’m not the same. I allow my kids to pick something they want to cook for the holidays and we make it at tradition. My daughter will be making a cheesecake and my son will be making the mac and cheese.

Take a quick weekend trip – Pick a spot that’s about 2 hrs away and just go. See what they are doing in town for the holidays and make it a day trip. There is a holiday pop up shop in Charlotte that I want to visit and it’s only 3 hrs away. We will hit the roads and do that. Make it a day trip so you only have to spend money on gas.

Holiday decor challenge – I love watching shows on HGTV where people would decorate rooms as a challenge to see who could decorate the best. Do this with your friends and/or family. Maybe you and a friend can pick a room in each other’s house (or outside), set a budget, and swap decor for the holiday.

Make a holiday movie – So I know we love the traditional holiday movies that we watch but how about this year create your own starring your own family. You can do this by creating a story that everyone has a role in or you can get with your local photographer and do a video (along with a photoshoot) that is focused on your family for the holidays. Make it a theme and make it fun.
